Clos de Tart: Burgundy's Great Monopole

Morey-Saint-Denis, Burgundy, France

At Clos de Tart, the cellar master harvests each plot within the walled estate on its own schedule. Nine centuries of uninterrupted ownership safeguard this single, unbroken parcel.

Nine Centuries, Four Owners

Cistercian nuns of Tart Abbey founded the estate in 1141. Only four families have held the keys across nearly nine hundred years. Today, Artémis Domaines guides the property under the direction of Alessandro Noli. The estate remains the largest Grand Cru monopole in all of Burgundy.

The team harvests only five bunches per vine each season. Yields stay exceptionally low to preserve natural energy and fruit concentration. The estate shifted to organic viticulture in 2015 and achieved full biodynamic certification shortly after.

A Mosaic Behind the Wall

A single stone wall stretches 1.2 kilometers around the entire 7.53-hectare vineyard. The slope rises from east to southeast across a complex mix of limestone and marl. Uniquely, workers planted the vines north-to-south perpendicular to the hill slope. This orientation shields the soil from water erosion and balances sun exposure across the day.

Vineyard workers divide the land into six distinct micro-terroirs. Deep clay-limestone soils feed the lower slope, while hard Prémeaux limestone crowns the upper ridge. The team vinifies each parcel separately to isolate these precise shifts in soil.

In the Cellar

Alessandro Noli adapts whole-cluster fermentation according to the personality of each vintage. The winemaking team ferments with native yeasts in temperature-controlled oak vats. Maturation takes place in custom French oak barrels over 18 to 20 months.

Noli reduced the proportion of new oak on recent vintages to highlight purity over wood. The wine bottles without fining or filtration to retain its natural weight and silkiness.

Capturing Individual Expression

Expect a signature profile that joins dark red berries with wild herbs, floral lift, and structured, velvety tannins. Younger vine fruit forms the Premier Cru “La Forge de Tart”. Old vines, some over one hundred years old, reserved exclusively for the Grand Cru Monopole, bring immense depth.

The Grand Cru balances rich fruit against a firm, limestone-driven mineral finish. A few years in the cellar reveals complex layers of truffle, spice, and dried rose petals.
